Desde la Baja Edad Media hasta los inicios del siglo XIX, las clases privilegiadas -nobleza y clero- ejercieron un dominio absoluto sobre la vida espaola, estructurada, como en los dems pases del occidente europeo, en un sistema de tipo estamental. Tomando como base el siglo XVII y apoyado sobre fuentes documentales en partes inditas, el profesor Domnguez Ortiz analiza los rasgos peculiares de esas clases dominantes a travs del estudio de su importancia numrica, sus formas de vida, sus estatutos jurdicos, su poder econmico y, en definitiva, su funcin poltica. Adems de una contribucin fundamental a la historiografa espaola de nuestros das por lo que representa en el campo de la estricta investigacin Las clases privilegiadas en la Espaa del Antiguo Rgimen constituye asimismo una aportacin capital para esclarecer los caracteres reales de las capas dirigenes de la sociedad tradicional espaola.
